ACT III · Chapter 13

THE VOICES HE MADE

The First Light

The woman beyond the dark returned at irregular intervals.

She never spoke directly to him. She mapped the prison through equations, chants, and pulses of blue-white energy that made the Void tremble. Ren'ō followed each signal like a starving man following the smell of food.

He began preparing for release.

The idea frightened him more than confinement.

The Void had become hateful, but familiar. It held no crowds, no alarms, no expectations. Outside waited a universe that had continued for five thousand years without him. La-Sol 7 would be dust. Its language might be extinct. The War God might have erased every record that Ren'ō had ever existed.

He considered refusing the door if it opened.

Then Laana appeared beside him.

The hallucination wore her torn coat from the final laboratory. Blood covered her hands.

"Coward," she said.

Ren'ō sat on the golden floor he had built and looked at her. "You always did know how to motivate people."

"You promised."

"I promised to protect you."

"No. You promised to remain a man."

He closed his eyes.

When he opened them, the hallucination was gone.

Ren'ō practiced speaking aloud even though the Void swallowed sound. His voice had changed. Deeper. Roughened by centuries of disuse. He recited military reports, old jokes, names of the dead.

He was terrified that the first real person he met would look into his eyes and see only the thing the Void had made.

The external signal returned stronger than before.

A blue line cut through the darkness.

Ren'ō stood.

The line widened into a circle filled with stars.

Cold air rushed through.

Real air.

It struck his skin like a blade. He stumbled. His body remembered wind before his mind did.

Beyond the opening stood a silver-haired woman in layered white and midnight robes. Her staff held a small mechanical cosmos: rings rotating around a violet sphere. Her pale eyes were fixed on him with the expression of someone who had opened a tomb and found the corpse standing.

"Ren'ō Kagenami," she said.

Hearing his full name in another living voice nearly drove him to his knees.

Instead, he lifted his chin.

"Depends who is asking."

The woman tightened her grip on the staff. "Izanara Nozomi. Oracle of the Celestial Vault."

"That sounds expensive."

She stared.

Ren'ō stepped toward the opening.

The Void resisted. Black pressure wrapped around his limbs. The prison had held him too long to release him willingly.

He drew golden light into one hand.

Izanara raised her staff. "Wait. The boundary is unstable. If you force it-"

Ren'ō punched the dark.

The Void cracked.

The opening exploded outward.

He fell through a storm of broken space and landed hard on a floor of white stone beneath an actual sky.

For several seconds, he could only feel rain striking his face.

Izanara approached carefully.

Ren'ō touched the water on his cheek and laughed once. The sound was raw, almost painful.

"Rain," he whispered.

Then he collapsed at her feet.
