ACT VI · Chapter 28

EVERY LA-SOL THAT COULD HAVE BEEN

The First Light

The War God fought with causality.

Each time Ren'ō landed a blow, the god selected a timeline in which it had missed. Each time Ren'ō closed the distance, the space between them became a dead universe. Red geometry rewrote the battlefield faster than ordinary thought.

Ren'ō adapted.

He stopped attacking the god's body and struck the choices themselves.

Gold entered the fractures between timelines. Possibilities that had been discarded returned. The War God's perfect movements developed uncertainty.

Izanara moved along the edge of the battle, using Astra Noctis to keep reality from tearing open. Blood ran from her nose. The celestial network screamed under the pressure.

The War God extended both hands.

The Throne vanished.

Ren'ō stood beneath the sky of La-Sol 7.

The city was whole.

Traffic moved between towers. The moon remained unbroken. A familiar ventilation fan rattled inside Citadel Nine.

Laana stepped through the laboratory door.

She was alive.

Not an illusion. Not a projection. A complete alternate reality placed around him.

"Ren'ō?" she said.

His body forgot the battle.

She approached. Her golden eyes searched his face. "You look older."

He could smell her coffee. Hear the exact cadence of her breathing.

Beyond the laboratory glass, the Divine Remnant remained untouched.

The War God's voice entered the room.

THIS WORLD EXISTS. CHOOSE IT, AND I WILL SEAL THE OTHERS.

Ren'ō looked at Laana.

Every part of him wanted to stay.

He imagined two bowls before dawn. Years they never had. Arguments over food and terrible safety decisions. A life where no one needed him to become the First Light.

Laana touched his cheek.

"What happened to you?"

Ren'ō covered her hand with his.

"A long story."

"Then tell me."

His golden eyes filled.

"I cannot."

The world trembled.

Laana looked toward the windows. "Why?"

"Because billions of other people are real too."

Understanding did not soften her fear.

"Will I die?"

Ren'ō's breath broke.

"This version of you will."

She studied him for one terrible moment.

Then she struck his chest with the heel of her hand.

"Coward," she said.

He laughed through tears.

It was exactly what she would have done.

"I know."

Laana stepped back. "Then do the difficult thing."

Ren'ō closed his eyes.

Golden light passed through the alternate world.

La-Sol 7 dissolved around him.

The War God stood waiting.

"You rejected paradise."

Ren'ō wiped his face. "You built it from a hostage."

He raised his fists.

"You never understood her."
