ACT VII · Chapter 34

REBORN WITH EVERY SCAR

The First Light

He spent the first week testing the new multiverse.

Not for weakness. For texture.

Ren'ō walked through worlds without announcing himself. He stood in rain on a planet with violet forests. Watched two moons rise over an ocean. Listened to street musicians in a city built inside the skeleton of a sleeping dragon. Ate fruit that insulted him telepathically.

The multiverse was imperfect.

Good.

People lied, fought, loved badly, built foolish governments, and complained about weather. Choice had survived the reset.

His powers had survived too.

He could cross universes with a step. Hold stars without burning. Enter the Void and leave before darkness closed behind him. The Divine Remnant no longer threatened to overwrite his humanity because it had become inseparable from the choices that defined him.

Ren'ō did not feel like a god.

He felt like a soldier on leave who had misplaced the date he was expected to return.

Messages began finding him.

Prayers from worlds that remembered the First Light as myth. Distress calls buried inside starlight. New gods testing boundaries. Old evils reconstituted under different names.

Ren'ō ignored them for three days.

On the fourth, he saved a farming moon from a collapsing orbit, repaired the moon, corrected the orbit, and left before anyone saw him.

On the fifth, he stopped a war by placing both armies' weapons in the same locked warehouse on an uninhabited planet.

On the sixth, he received seventeen thousand complaints from the commanders involved.

He considered that proof of success.

The anchor crystal pulsed more strongly each day. Izanara was searching.

Ren'ō could have followed the signal.

He did not.

Partly because he trusted her to find him.

Mostly because he had discovered a world with a city that seemed constitutionally incapable of silence.

Neon towers. Flying traffic. Corporate warfare. Street markets beneath holographic advertisements. Rain that smelled of metal and electricity.

Night City.

Ren'ō arrived at midnight and immediately witnessed a vehicle chase, an argument involving three cybernetic arms, and a noodle vendor threatening a customer with a soup ladle.

He felt strangely at home.

No one looked twice at glowing eyes. Half the population had more conspicuous modifications.

He bought a bowl of ramen and asked for directions to somewhere quiet.

The vendor pointed upward.

"Roofs," she said. "Only place the city forgets to charge rent."

Ren'ō looked at the towers.

"Reasonable world."
