ACT VII · Chapter 37

THE WOMAN WHO FOUND HIM AGAIN

The First Light

Izanara sat beside him on the edge of the roof.

Ren'ō offered her the remaining ramen.

She examined the bowl. "This has been exposed to industrial rain."

"You suspended the rain."

"Before I arrived, it was exposed."

"The broth is strong enough to defend itself."

She took the bowl anyway.

Below them, Night City continued tearing itself apart with enthusiasm. Somewhere in the streets, the mercenary with the plastic flower began another argument.

Izanara ate one bite.

Her expression tightened.

"Too salty," she said.

Ren'ō looked out at the neon horizon. "That seems to be a universal constant."

For a while, they discussed the reset.

Izanara remembered the old multiverse in full. The anchor had protected her as Ren'ō intended. Her body had reformed within the Celestial Vault, though the Vault itself now existed on a world of snow beneath a different name. Prophecies had returned, but Ren'ō remained absent from all of them.

"Good," he said. "I was enjoying the privacy."

"You converted firearms into flowers in a city covered by surveillance."

"A minor lapse."

She told him that new fractures had appeared at the edges of reality. Not consequences of failure, but openings created by freedom. Worlds that had once been separated were touching. Powers, species, and histories were crossing boundaries.

Ren'ō listened without urgency.

"You expected this," Izanara said.

"I expected worse."

"Will you help?"

He looked at the empty bowl.

The old soldier would have stood immediately.

The man who survived the Void had learned that rest was not abandonment.

"Tomorrow," he said.

Izanara raised an eyebrow.

"There are people in danger now."

Ren'ō lifted one hand. Golden light spread across the horizon, invisible to the city. Somewhere far away, a collapsing bridge stabilized. A wounded child felt warmth close a wound. A predatory entity approaching through a fracture found the doorway sealed.

"Handled," he said.

Izanara looked at him, then laughed under her breath.

"You have become insufferable."

"Five thousand years of personal development."

She rested her shoulder against his.

Ren'ō watched the city lights shimmer across wet rooftops. Laana remained part of him. The dead remained remembered. Power still carried weight. None of that prevented this moment from being simple.

"What happens tomorrow?" Izanara asked.

Ren'ō's golden eyes reflected the new multiverse.

"We explore."

"And after that?"

"We see who needs help."

"And the titles? The First Light? The Oath of Dawn?"

He sighed. "We ignore those."

"That has never worked."

"I intend to fail consistently."

The first light of morning appeared between the towers, pale and ordinary beneath the neon.

Ren'ō stood and offered Izanara his hand.

She took it.

Together, they stepped off the roof and vanished into the waking sky.
