ACT VII · Chapter 33

WHITE SILENCE

The First Light

Ren'ō woke beneath a new sun.

Grass moved against his cheek. Wind crossed an open field. Somewhere nearby, insects argued with the afternoon.

He remained still for several minutes.

Not because he was confused.

Because he remembered everything.

La-Sol 7. Laana. The laboratory. Five thousand years without sky. Izanara opening the door. Every world they crossed. The War God's final expression. The sensation of rebuilding reality with his hands.

Nothing had been taken.

The Divine Remnant rested inside him, complete and quiet.

Ren'ō sat up.

His body was younger. Nineteen, perhaps. The age he had been before war carved itself permanently into his posture. Black hair fell over his eyes. Golden light answered when he flexed his fingers. His strength remained. So did the Void, though it no longer felt like a prison. It felt like a scar he had learned to carry.

He searched the new multiverse.

The act took less than a heartbeat.

Worlds unfolded across his awareness. Some resembled places he knew. Others were entirely new. The War God's influence was gone. The people of Orison lived under a different constellation. Meridia's bell existed as a harmless monument. The Uncounted had founded a nation among whole moons.

La-Sol 7 existed again.

Ren'ō stopped breathing.

The world turned around its sun, alive.

But history had changed. No Divine Integration Laboratory. No War God descending from orbit. Millions of familiar souls living unfamiliar lives.

He searched for Laana.

Dr. Laana Rhee stood in a university laboratory, arguing with a machine and drinking terrible coffee.

Alive.

She did not remember him.

Ren'ō watched from beyond space for one long moment.

He could have gone to her.

He could have restored every memory with a touch.

He did not.

Laana laughed at something a colleague said. The sound was the same.

Ren'ō closed the vision.

"Live," he whispered.

The word hurt.

It also felt right.

He searched for Izanara.

The anchor crystal at his neck pulsed once, but the new multiverse was vast. Her location remained hidden behind layers of celestial interference.

Ren'ō smiled.

"Of course."

He stood in the field wearing nothing but the remains of golden light.

With a thought, he formed black clothing, armored lines, and a cloak whose inner surface carried the pattern of a sunrise. The circular symbol over his chest glowed warmly.

He looked across the random world beneath him.

Reality had survived.

For the first time in more than five thousand years, no immediate crisis required him.

Ren'ō considered this suspicious.
