ACT IV · Chapter 20
THE NAME THAT FOLLOWED FIRE
The First Light
They crossed the first dead region aboard a vessel Izanara named Astra Noctis.
Ren'ō called it the staff with rooms.
The ship moved through fractures between realities, following Laana's encoded route. Each stop carried evidence of the War God's rule: abandoned planets, gods executed for teaching mortals forbidden knowledge, civilizations forced to worship the order that would eventually erase them.
Ren'ō intervened whenever he could.
On a moon where people lived beneath a bell-shaped machine that drained their memories, he broke the bell and returned three generations of stolen names.
On a water world ruled by a divine governor, he stood on the ocean and absorbed a storm large enough to drown a continent.
On a refugee ark pursued by red-eyed soldiers, he folded the distance behind the ship and placed its hunters on the opposite side of the galaxy.
Stories spread faster than they traveled.
The First Light.
The Oath of Dawn.
The Man the Void Could Not Keep.
Ren'ō rejected every title with increasing irritation.
"You cannot stop people from naming hope," Izanara told him.
"They could name it something less theatrical."
"What would you prefer?"
"Ren'ō."
"That name is also spreading."
He leaned back in the command chair and closed his eyes. "I should have remained anonymous."
"You punched a divine construct through a city while glowing like a star."
"Subtlety was difficult under the circumstances."
Their companionship settled into an unexpected rhythm. Izanara calculated paths. Ren'ō ignored the safest one. She warned him against impossible choices. He made them survivable. He cooked badly. She pretended not to notice. She read prophecies aloud when she could not sleep. He listened from the doorway without admitting he had come to check on her.
The Void remained inside him.
Some nights he woke with the ship dismantling around his power. Izanara would stand beyond the door and speak his name until the stars returned to his eyes.
She never told him he was safe.
She told him where he was.
"Astra Noctis. Observation deck. I am here."
Facts. Anchors. Things the Void could not imitate.
One night, Ren'ō asked why she continued traveling with him.
Izanara looked through the window at the long road of dead suns ahead.
"Because every future that includes you is hidden from me," she said. "For the first time, I do not know what happens next."
"That sounds inconvenient."
"It is terrifying."
Ren'ō waited.
She looked at him.
"I prefer it."
He smiled then. Not the sharp expression he had practiced in the Void. A real one. Small, tired, and warm.
"You have poor judgment," he said.
"I released you. That was established immediately."
The Astra Noctis crossed into the second dead region, carrying the oracle and the impossible man toward the god who had made both of them unnecessary.
