ACT IV · Chapter 18
THE DEAD ARCHIVE
The First Light
The trail from Orison led to a planet without weather.
Its atmosphere was frozen in place. Clouds hung motionless over black mountains. Lightning remained trapped between sky and ground like glass veins.
At the northern pole stood an archive built by a civilization erased three thousand years earlier.
Ren'ō and Izanara entered through a door that opened only when touched by divine energy. Inside, millions of memory crystals lined the walls.
Most contained screams.
Ren'ō walked deeper, jaw tight.
The archive had recorded the War God's visits to countless worlds. He appeared whenever mortals crossed a hidden threshold: the discovery that divine law could be rewritten.
"He is not protecting balance," Izanara said. "He is protecting hierarchy."
"Same word when spoken by the powerful."
They reached the final chamber.
A crystal showed La-Sol 7.
Ren'ō stopped breathing.
The recording had been captured by a distant observer. He saw the broken moon, the burning atmosphere, and two figures fighting above the capital. Gold against red.
He watched himself fail from a stranger's perspective.
Izanara moved to close the crystal.
"No."
"Ren'ō."
"Let it play."
The planet broke again.
His face remained still until Laana's transmission appeared in the archive as a corrupted signal. The crystal could not resolve her image. Only a voice.
Remain a man.
Ren'ō placed one hand against the memory surface.
The archive reacted to the Divine Remnant. Hidden data opened beneath the recording: a coordinate sequence encoded by Laana during the final seconds of the laboratory.
She had known the War God might survive.
She had hidden a path inside his own attack geometry.
Izanara stared at the unfolding map. "She left you a route to him."
"She left the universe a route."
"You are the only one who could read it."
Ren'ō looked at Laana's blurred silhouette.
"She was arrogant like that."
The route crossed seven dead regions and ended beyond the limits of the known multiverse.
Izanara calculated the distance. "The journey could take centuries."
"I have lost longer evenings."
"You cannot treat time as meaningless because it was stolen from you."
Ren'ō turned. "I do not. That is why I refuse to waste more of it."
The archive began collapsing as the War God's failsafe detected the decoded signal.
Ren'ō took the memory crystal containing La-Sol 7.
Izanara raised an eyebrow. "That belongs to a protected archive."
"File a complaint."
They escaped as the frozen lightning finally moved.
Behind them, the dead world experienced its first storm in three thousand years.
