Ren’ō Kagenami archive

ACT IV · Chapter 16

IZANARA NOZOMI

The First Light

Izanara had seen Ren'ō before she found him.

Not in prophecy. Prophecy refused him.

She had seen the wound he left in probability: futures bending around an absence, dead timelines ending one heartbeat earlier than they should, stars forming in regions where creation had been mathematically impossible.

For decades she traced the disturbance through the Celestial Vault. Every path ended at a sealed null realm abandoned by the old gods.

The prison had no listed occupant.

When she opened it, Ren'ō Kagenami fell out carrying enough energy to ignite a galaxy and a broken pendant he guarded more carefully than his own life.

Now he stood in her archive wearing borrowed black clothing, arms folded, criticizing five thousand years of celestial scholarship.

"This map is wrong," he said.

"It has been verified by twelve oracle orders."

"Then twelve oracle orders are wrong."

"On what basis?"

Ren'ō pointed to a sequence of destroyed systems. "The distances are being measured in ordinary space. The War God does not travel through ordinary space. He folds worlds toward himself."

Izanara studied the pattern.

He was right.

She disliked how often that happened.

"How do you know?" she asked.

"He used the same geometry to throw me into the Void."

His voice remained light, but his fingers had closed around Laana's pendant.

Izanara adjusted the map. The dead systems aligned into a spiral.

At its center sat a living world named Orison.

Ren'ō was already walking toward the transit chamber.

"You are not going alone," Izanara said.

"I survived alone for five thousand years."

"Poorly."

He stopped.

The air between them sharpened.

Izanara held his gaze. "You survived. That is not the same as being unharmed."

For a moment, the Divine Remnant stirred. Gold traced the veins in Ren'ō's hand.

Then he exhaled.

"You are very direct for an oracle."

"The future wastes enough time speaking in riddles."

"Fine. Come with me."

"That was not permission I required."

The corner of his mouth moved.

Orison was the first world Ren'ō saw after the Vault.

Green continents curved beneath them. Cities floated on magnetic oceans. Billions of lights burned across the night side.

He stood at the viewing deck, silent.

Izanara watched his reflection rather than the planet.

"It is alive," he said.

"Yes."

"That should not feel unusual."

The transit vessel entered the atmosphere.

Below, alarms began to sound.

A red geometric symbol opened across the clouds.

Ren'ō's expression changed.

The guarded survivor vanished. The soldier returned.

"Get us to the surface," he said.

Izanara reached for her staff.

"Where?"

Ren'ō looked at the largest concentration of civilians.

"Wherever he wants destroyed first."
